James Courtney haqs come out and stated that he will beat Murph's record this year, I tend to differ, I dont know why people think Murph cant beat his own record? The SGR machine has proven to be very fast and it was Jason Richards who came close last year, no doubt the same setup will be used again this year so Im expecting Murph to turn it on this year.

HRT dont really setup their cars for qualifying but with more of a focus on Race setup but lets see what happnes.

Adelaide, Sandown, Symmons Plains, Albert Park, Surfers Paradise and Barbagallo all hold practice lap records since 2005.

As for the rest, many are in 1999-2001 with the old Bridgestone control tyre (which by all accounts was considerably faster), or on tracks which now have very degraded surfaces (Oran Park, QLD). No lap records remain from 2003.

On average, the cars HAVE gotten faster over the years. This still doesn't even affect the fact that the lap at the time was 1.1 seconds faster than anyone else did all weekend. It was a one off show of brilliant driving. Nothing other than a ripper drive can explain just how quick that lap was.

Yet the cars are quicker at just about every other track than they were in 2003.

The fact still remains, he beat the whole field that year (bound by the same rules and track conditions), by over a second. 2:06.8 isn't than impressive until you look at the fact no one had done better than a 2:07.9 until that lap. The time isn't that special, it's the leap in pace over the rest of the contenders to get pole.

I'm not that big a Murph fan, but there are just some performances that stun you and this was one of the best. Credit where credit is due.

surely if those things were not a factor Murph himself could beat that record as well? Even as a fan of murph some of the arguaments about him are nothing short of embaressing. YEs it was a brilliant lap that will be remembered for a long time but its one lap in ircumstances that will never be repeated dont hype it up to much.

I'm not sure what those circumstances are? If you say that the track was resurfaced that year, why didn't anyone else come within 1.1 seconds of his time? 2:07s had never been previously seen at the track but Murph did a 2:06.8. Even if it was one glorious lap, it is worthy of the hype and the driver deserves all the accolades. This kind of thing happens rarely and it really was a special lap. Those in motorsport can appreciate how amazing it is to do something on that level. The fact it still isn't beaten with so many developments in many areas is proof of just how gutsy and perfect that lap was.

How about you give the car/conditions a wrap as well. Murf doesn't walk on water.

Looks like it stands for another year.
gomurph51 Posted - 10 Oct 2009 : 18:15:02
the thing that makes the lap even more special is that it was done in the shootout. If someone does beat it i hope they do it in the shootout when they only have one lap to get their tyres warm

It could have been...a 2:07.2 in Qualifying, if the track wasn't partly wet, I think we could have seen it! Go Murph!

The lap was bloody awesome and everyone on pit straight acknoledged it as something amazing. 6 years on an you still cannot accept the lap like the teams did back then.

As for comparing year on year, that is a different story and many have raised the different aspects that have made it hard to beat.

I cannot wait for it to be beaten so we don't have to put up with this topic every year.

Personally I don't believe it will be broken this year. I actually don't think they will come close.

Sorry SF.
Bad news.
You will have to put up with this topic again next year.
