Reminds me of a time when my parents and I were in the car at the train station (this was down the line in NZ and we were waiting for some famous steam train) and it was raining. Yesterday I rang Vicroads to find out why and after pushing 9 buttons and being transferred 3 times I was told that I hadn't paid last years rego, after politely telling them that I had in my hands a receipt and the log book with a Vicroads stamp in it, after being on hold for 10 minutes or so, the lady (who was really helpful) said that yes it is registered and yes she could see that I had paid it, she couldn't explain why their system had not updated the registration status, she rectified it.

Trouble is now I will have little time to get my car club to sign off on the form to renew the rego and secondly, if any time in the last 12 months I had been pulled over by the police the system would show that I was unregistered.

The inquiry was instigated by a group of 'eminent Australians' led by Malcolm Fraser. They lobbied the government who got it through parliament. It's one of 51 inquiries currently being err.. "enquired into" by various joint committees. They give a lot of backbenchers things to do, and they make various groups with various agendas feel good in being able to say "we told you so", etc. The government is usually able to speed them up or slow them down, according to how any particular inquiry may affect it politically. IF it's still going at September 14 (I don't know when it's due to conclude atm), and IF the government is returned, it might lead somewhere interesting, but..
