I know there are plenty of fans of dirt racing. Are any of them on this site?

Rotorua Speedway kicked off the season last night with a fantastic meeting. HUGE crowd witnessed Youth Ministocks (12-16 year olds) Stockcars, SuperStocks, MiniSprints, Production Saloons, Saloons, Modifieds, and a professional Fireworks display.
120 drivers there according to track announcers.

Plenty of biff in two of my favourite categories - Stockcars & Superstocks. One roll, a couple of others up the wall, plenty of broken suspension. NZ Superstock champion, and Rotorua driver - Darcy Hunter 1NZ looking very fast in unsponsored plain black car. My other favourite - the modified's - included a couple of cars up from Stratford, and they were all competitive and very fast. Love those flames, glowing brakes and the noise!

Tiger Woods' caddy, and NZ SuperSedan champion - Steve Williams, drove his Saloon with his left arm in a cast. Broke his hand 2 weeks ago at Mount Maunganui. Unfortunately he had another crash in race 2 last night. While challenging for the lead, a back marker spun in front of him and they nose to tailed. Both cars out for the night. No-one hurt in that one.

Rotorua track has undergone a major upgrade to spectator facilities over the last 2 years. FM race broadcast starts from the next race meeting. I hear some other tracks have recently introduced this too.

Roll on the World 240's for SuperStocks in January.
UK Stockcar racer, and twice World 240 champ, Frankie Wainman Junior, has built a new Superstock car to NZ regulations and is bringing it to NZ for the summer. Yes, he built it in his race shop in the UK. Builds his own cars for UK racing. Look out for car 55R from December on around the country.
www.mylaps.com has results of british stockar racing. The top category is Brisca F1 www.brisca.com or www.f1stockcars.co.uk Frankie races under #515 in the UK, but that is used by Rotorua SuperStock driver Stan Hickey, so Frankie reverts to #55 while in NZ. (Stan used to be #55 - they swapped for some reason)

And no - I have no connection to Rotorua Speedway in any way. I am just an impressed spectator. Metachromatic defragmentation scot monophyletic aerograph interact gastrointestinal phenazone.

That the speedway out North of New Brighton near the coast? I went there once when I was living in Dunedin and had a holiday in CHCH.

I Was raised on Rotorua Speedway, with Stockcars the main attraction. So cars that don't hit each other aren't of major attraction to me unless they go real fast!
For that reason, Dunedin speedway never appealed for the 9 years I lived there, although the super saloons were OK when a major meeting held there. And once they got the NZ Modified champs somehow. (Modifieds never raced there otherwise.) That was in the era when wings were massive. It was a windy day and a few of the cars were pushed over along the main straight due to the side wind!

One thing I forgot to mention about Rotorua - no noise restrictions, and they don;t seem to have any time restrictions. www.rotoruaspeedway.co.nz

Nah its heading out of town towards the south, driving down to Ashburton you will go passed the turn off for it. Its right next door to Ruapuna race Track (the tar seal track)

I was raised on Ruapuna Speedway, I still remember shaking only a few years ago seeing 28 Sprintcars lining up for the NZ champs, and you guessed it, they didnt even make the 1st turn without a car flipping

I've never heard of adult ministocks before. Can you explain more about that category.

They are just Ministocks but the drivers are 17 and over.
Usually once a driver is done in youths they spend a few years in adults then move up.
Well thats what they do down here in Palmerston North.

I crew for 61p Superstock Garry Trotter down here in Palmy and am also the track photographer, www.pics4u.co.nz/stu - better knowin as stockyboy photos. am putting my name on 2 rotorua cars soon.

The adult ministock vehicles are identical to the youth class?

Sounds reasonable. And that probably makes for good use of the cars too. A lot of the ministocks are shared between 2 drivers up here. So they have enough entrants for 2 or 3 heats.

We don't have any adult ministocks up here.

One 17 y.o. this season has gone straight into superstocks! He was put up the wall in his first race last weekend. Aquited himself well though. Can't remember his name sorry.

I've recently been converted - guess thats what happens when yer the Huntly photographers other half eh?
I've spent most of my time at the Huntly circuit and haven't missed a meeting there yet. I've also managed to get to Waikaraka, Robertson (me and Yaz bumped into you there, Stockyboy - hopefully you know who I am now :) ), and tried for Meeanee, even though it got rained off.

A Huntly driver wasn't it? Can't remember the name either, just he did the leap from ministocks to supers.

The 17 y.o. could be Jeremy Fleming, 69R (the number sounds familiar) He is mentioned as a rookie driver for this year and I am pretty sure it was a local. As he was fast!

Yes it was Jeremy according to this thread on MacGors:
http://macgor.proboards60.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1162676967

He was racing in the Waikato Champs on the weekend too.
More by luck than skill, I managed to snap his car in the pits last Saturday.

The NZ Superstock team racing at Rotorua gets a European showing tonight on Motors TV. I hope we get to see more if Wainman is having a bash.

That must be old race footage. There hasn't been any teams racing at Rotorua for at least 9 months. Season has just started. Unless it is from another NZ track, or isn't teams racing, but some other Superstock racing from Rotorua. Only meeting I can recall TV camera's being at is the World 240's from last January. Wainman featuring big time in races 1 & 2. I am sure Wainman would not be in NZ yet, certainly his new UK built car is not due to get here until mid December.

Be interested to hear back from you what racing is shown over there.

According to Dirt & Track, Wainman isn't due in NZ until December either - after the car in fact.
It goes on to say that it's not known when the car is due to be debuted, but Wainman himself should be competing at a number of events before the new year.
