Only a few days now till the rally gets underway, can't wait.
Few changes in drivers, Kleinschmidt is now in the BMW team, Nani Roma has a new co-driver after his old co-driver was killed in a rally raid last year.
Robby Gordon is back in his big Hummer, he'll be an interesting one.
Carlos Sainz makes his second Dakar start.
All the same drivers in the Mitsubishis.
WTCC driver Yvan Muller will run a Team Dessoude buggy, and ex-WRC driver Freddy Loix makes a start in a Honda.

Day 1 is over:
All very Volkswagen up front. Sousa is in a private-run Toureg. Of course, thought, times from this stage mean nothing whatsoever. We really have so far to go it is not funny.

They are. They have very strong cars, and on outright pace, I have a feeling they may be slightly quicker than the Mitsubishis.
The Dakar is not about outright pace tohugh. Everything can change in Morrocco and Mauritania.

Edit: Day 2 completed:
Sainz won the stage, the Volkswagens continue to look good, but the Mitsus are on the pace now with them. Ari Vatanen lost and hour and a half after water getting into his engine in a water splash.
Rooby Gordon partially rolled and lost 11 minutes.

The stage was too tight for the trucks, so they went straight on to Malaga.
Tommorow, the first African stage!

Edit:
Stage 3 completed, the first on African soil. Kleinschmidt lost a lot of time.
Sainz leads, de Villiers won the stage. Mitsus are right with them.

Sad news has come through that South African rider Elmer Symons had an accident and has since died of his injuries. The helicopter arrived within eight minutes of Symons' Iritrack alert beacon going off, but could only record his death.
He was 29.

The Hummer is good for comedy value, if nothing else.

Sorry to hear of another death though

Looks good the Hummer, but doesn't seem to be going too well.

The "rear engined Hummer" is only a 2 wheel drive too, so it struggles in the sand and mud!!

New Commodore Hey! So you used your own money? Would you like to buy a used bridge?

Yeah, it doesn't seem to have shown any speed at any part of the rally.
I think Schlesser is 2 wheel drive too, but he won a stage.

Edit:
Stage 5 done. Sainz continues to lead. Peterhansel is making ground again, but the rest of the Mitsus are struggling to keep up with the Volkswagens.

Not other than Symmons earlier in the rally.

Edit:
Peterhansel has just claimed his 9th Dakar win at the Lac Rose.
Cyril Depres has won his second Dakar and Hans Stacey has won the Truck class.

Don't have the info at my finger tips but it was one of the riders, pulled over 15km from the end of liason and had what they believe was a massive heart attack . Sad, but these things can happen to anyone at any time and anywhere.

Yes, it was a French rider, I do not have his name here.
