We're just over a week into the 2011 season. The Hopman Cup has been run and won by the USA team of Bethanie Mattek-Sands & John Isner. The Serbian Team made of Ana Ivanovic & Novak Djokovic made the final but had to withdraw due to Ana Ivanovic getting an abdominal strain. Lleyton Hewitt & Alicia Molik put in some good performances too.

The Chennai Open in India didn't have too many top name players in the event, although it did provide some suprises. Tomáš Berdych, the World number 6 and the first seed for the Chennai Open, was beaten in the Semi Finals by 3rd seed Stanislas Wawrinka. World number 14 and 2nd seed and reigning champ, Marin #268;ili#263;, was knocked out in the first round. 4th and 5th seeds, Richard Gasquet and Jeremy Chardy were knocked out rather early aswell. The draw as been kind to number 7 seed and world number 60, Xavier Malisse. He has made it to the final, he will play Stanislas Wawrinka.

The Qatar open has some very big names with the likes of Federer and Nadal. There weren't too many suprises here with all 8 seeds ending up where you'd expect them to be except Nadal, the world number 1 lost the Semi Finals to Nikolay Davydenko, the 4th seed and world number 22 beat him rather easily. However Nadal has fighting fitness and was sick. Roger Federer didn't loose a set for the entire Open. He beat Davydenko in the final with ease.

The first all womens tournament of the year got under way in New Zealand. Gréta Arn sprung a suprise and won the ASB Classic. She beat Yanina Wickmayer in the final. The tournament's biggest name Maria Sharapova made the quarter finals

The first tournament with men and womens event was the brisbane Intenrational. World number 6 and seed number 1, Sam Stosur, lost in the 2nd round to Jarmila Groth. Infact the top 3 seeds for the womens lost within the first 2 rounds. The womens draw was filled with upsets with only 2 seeds making it to the Quarter Finals. Petra Kvitová beat Andrea Petkovic in the final in strait sets.
World number 9 and 3rd seed, Fernando Verdasco lost in the first round. Mardy Fish, Feliciano López & Denis Istomin lost rather early aswell. Aussie, Matt Ebden had a wonderful run and made the Quarter Finals. South African, Kevin Anderson played very well and made it to the semi finals but lost in 3 sets to Andy Roddick. World number 5 and seed number 1, Robin Soderling, played number 2 seed and world number 8, Andy Roddick in the final. Soderling won in strait sets.

This week's tournaments are the Medibank International in Sydney (Mens and Womens), Heineken Open in New Zealand (Mens), Hobart International (Womens). The Kooyong Classic (Mens) takes place this week aswell. However unlike the other tournaments, only 8 players take part. The womens field at the Medibank International is packed with stars! The 8 seeds are players from the Top 11 in the world! World number 13, Shahar Pe'er isn't even seeded! Should be a great week of action!
--------------------------
Medibank International so far:
*Aussies Bernard Tomic and Chris Guccione qualified for the event. Guccione lost his first round clash, he was a chance in both sets, but he wasn't good enough. Tomic is currently playing in the 3rd set of his 1st round match
*Aussie Jelena Doki#263; lost in the first round.
*Aussie Sam Stosur won her first round match but lost in the 2nd round in a 3 set match
*Kim Clijsters is in brilliant form and has made the Quarter finals. *Out of the 9 players that are ranked 12 or better, only 3 have made it past the 2nd round!

Hobart International:
*Aussies Jarmila Groth and Alica Molik have made it to the 2nd round
*Aussies Sally Peers and Oliver Rogowska lost in their first round matches

Heineken Open:
*Kiwi Michael Venus managed to take a set off Tommy Robredo to give the locals something to cheer about. However he lost the next 2 sets and lost the match.

Kooyong Classic starts tomorrow. Aussie Lleyton Hewitt will play Mikhail Youzhny.

Lucky! Mens Qualifying for the Open starts tomorrow. Aussies Carsten Ball and Besnard Tomic got the final 2 mens wildcards. Aussies Sally Peers and Sophie Ferguson got the final 2 womens wildcards. Hopefully Tomic gets a good draw

Just scrounging up all the passes I can get from TA now. 10 ground passes and counting.

The womens draw lacks a bit of talent and depth I feel, compared to previous years. The mens draw is awesome.

RIP LJ - loved and never forgotten.

"It was dry for the second go-around. Grice, nervous, worrying about his Bathurst jinx, ran 2:25.9. The amazing Brock, using every last centimetre of bitumen, yet keeping the car straight and balanced and at full noise, came back with a staggering 2:20.0 as if to say: "Match that". And people just shook their heads, bit their lips and wondered who would be second".

The Peter Brock trophy is now where it belongs.

I'm going to the Tuesday day session - paid for the outside courts (which are really cheap compared to the Rod Laver tickets, particularly first round as you see some of the bigger seeds in action anyway).

Preferably I'd like to see Baghdatis, Del Potro, Tsonga, lower seeded players (you know, the dark horses in this championship) on Tuesday if they play, would be great to see them in action.

Hewitt through to the final of the Kooyong Classic. Draw realeased todaay aswell. We're in for some good games. Stosur got a decent draw. She just has to get her game together.
---
Hewitt won Kooyong and Groth won Hobart. Nice titles to add to their CVs

Aus Open - Day 1 Reveiw:
Federer was in fine form today and easily won. However his next match will be very tough but will be fantastic to watch. Giles Simon (Winner of the Medibank International) who is one of the best in the world will be his opponent. That will be some popcorn tennis.
Gael Monfils has an almighty scare today. Was down 2 sets and was gone in the 3rd...but he somehow came back and won it and the final 2 sets to win. Djokovic and Roddick got through easily today. 18th seed, Sam Querrey and 23rd seed (And former World #3), Nikolay Davydenko suprisingly lost today.

In the womens draw was as expected and no real shocks. Aravane Rezaď & Daniela Hantuchová were the first seeds to be eliminated from the womens draw. A few scares for some.

Not the best days for the Aussies. Olivia Rogowska lost 3-6, 1-6 to Evgeniya Rodina. Jarmila Groth was in fine form coming into the Open, but she was eliminated in a tight contest between 21st seed, Yanina Wickmayer, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6. Peter Luczak was the only Aussie male in action, however he lost in strait sets to 17th seed, Ivan Ljubi#269;i#263;, 3-6, 3-6, 6-7.
However it wasn't all bad news. Jelena Dokic beat Zuzana Ondrášková comfortabley in strait sets, 6-3, 6-2. She will play Barbora Záhlavová-Strýcová in the 2nd round.

Aussies In Action Tomorrow:
Womens:
*Sam Stosur (5th Seed) V Lauren Davis @ Rod Laver Arena
*Anastasia Rodionova V Flavia Pennetta (22nd Seed) @ Margaret Court Arena
*Alicia Molik V Roberta Vinci @ Margaret Court Arena
*Sally Peers V Petra Kvitova (25th Seed) @ Show Court 2
*Sophie Ferguson V Petra Martic @ Show Court 3

Mens:
*Lleyton Hewitt V David Nalbandian (27th Seed) @ Rod Laver Arena
*Bernard Tomic V Jeremy Chardy @ Hisense Arena
*Matthew Ebden V Michael Russell @ Margaret Court Arena
*Marinko Matosevic V Richard Berankis @ Court 6
*Carsten Ball V Pere Riba @ Court 8

There is the possibility of an All-Aussie Match in the 2nd Round if Lleyton Hewitt and Marinko Matosevic win their matches. However I think it is unlikely we will see something like this happen

There we have it folks! Novak wins the title! One of my fav Tennis players - glad he won it. The guy was faultess and will be on a few points off knocking Roger Federer off 2nd in the rankings.

However the action doesn't stop there. No WTA tournys this week because of the first round of the Fed Cup this week. Australia play #1 seed Italy in Hobart on the 5th-6th.

In the ATP we have 3 events this week, the SA Tennis Open (South Africa), PBZ Zagreb Indoors (Croatia), Movistar Open (Chile). Movistar Open will take place on Clay while the other 2 events will be played on Hardcourts. Aussie Peter Luczak will play Pablo Andújar in the first round of the Movistar Open. Marin #268;ili#263;, Ivan Ljubi#269;i#263;, David Nalbandian, Juan Mónaco, Thomaz Bellucci, Feliciano López, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Richard Gasquet are the biggest names in action this week.
