Indy 500: Practice 3 times

Josef Newgarden returned to the top of the timesheets on Monday, the first driver into the over-222mph speeds as the Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing rookie continued to impress.

Indianapolis 500 rookie or not, Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing's Josef Newgarden continued to show them how it was done at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as practice for the 96th running of 'the greatest spectacle in motorsport' entered its third day on Monday.

Newgarden took advantage of a late outbreak of pack-drafting to boost his speeds, as did many of the others - including Jean Alesi, who finally topped 210 mph and was duly able to put in the laps necessary for him to complete his Rookie Orientation Program. He has duly become eligible to progress to Indy 500 qualifying and make it onto the grid for the race on May 27.

Bryan Clauson is a real talent.

At Indy last year I watched him race 3 times in two days, qualifying on the front row for the Freedom 100 Indy Lights race on Carb Day, that night dominating the "Hoosier Hundred" in his Midget on the dirt at Indianapolis State Fairgrounds, and then following it up the next night at the traditional "Night before the 500" race meeting at Lucas Oil Speedway in his Silver Crown machine.

However the fact that Newgarden, Saavedra and Clauson are setting the pace shows either the new rules REALLY have thrown it all out in the open, or those guys are chasing the early glory while the Ganassi's and Penske's are knuckling down and doing the basics

REALLY missing not being there this May

Indy 500: Practice 4 times

Marco Andretti went to the top of the speed charts with a lap topping the 223mph mark, thanks to an outbreak of pack-draft practice with his Andretti Autosport team mates.

Andretti Autosport tried out some team formation flying practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Tuesday, on the fourth day of practice for the 96th running of the Indy 500 on May 27.

Marco Andretti went top with a time of 40.2367s (223.676mph) well ahead of Penske's Helio Castroneves who was the second fastest car of the afternoon ahead of James Hinchcliffe. Ganassi's Graham Rahal was the fastest Honda of the day in fourth place, and in total 14 cars put in laps over 220mph.

HVM Racing's Simona de Silvestro remained the slowest car of the week, despite picking up almost 10mpg on Tuesday over her previous best lap speed.

UPDATE;
Indy 500: Practice 5 times

Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing driver Josef Newgarden was back on top of the timesheets on Wednesday, although the shine went off his day with late contact against the wall.

Josef Newgarden improved his best time of the week at Indianapolis to 222.785mph (40.3977s) on Wednesday to top the timesheets ahead of a trio of Andretti Autosport cars consisting of Marco Andretti, Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe.

On a day generally slightly slower than yesterday because of the lack of large-scale drafting activity, Dario Franchitti (221.623mph, 40.6095s) and Justin Wilson (221.420mph, 40.6468s) were among the few to improve on their best times of Indy 500 practice week in fifth and sixth positions of the day.

Elsewhere, Jean Alesi expressed safety concerns in his Lotus Fan Force United car after it emerged that he and HVM's Simona de Silvestro benefited from a turbo boost exception to set improved times earlier this week. Without that advantage, Alesi was back down to 205.389mph (43.8193s) and de Silvestro to 205.009mph (43.9005s). It also emerged that Katherine Legge is due to attempt rookie certification on Thursday morning, presumably with a Chevrolet engine.

A full report and driver quotes from practice 5 are available.

Indy 500: Practice 6 times

Scott Dixon was the second driver of the week - and the only car of the day - to top 223mph as practice for the 2012 Indianapolis 500 completed its sixth day on Thursday.

Ganassi's Scott Dixon went to the top of the timesheets for the first time in 2012 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, only the second man to post a lap speed in excess of 223mph this week.

All four Ganassi cars were in the top ten on Thursday, while two of the three Penske cars also started to move into position ready for this weekend's qualifying battle for the 96th running of the Indianapolis 500.

Josef Newgarden refused to let the experienced big names to hustle him aside, however, and the Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing rookie once again finished at the sharp event in second place just 0.0687s off Dixon's best lap. Another Indy 500 rookie - AJ Foyt Racing's Wade Cunningham - also impressed by breaking into the top ten by the end of the shortened five-hour practice session.

Dragon Racing was finally able to take to the track on Thursday after completing their engine deal with Chevrolet for the Indy 500 event following their split from Lotus. Sebastien Bourdais quickly notched up a time of 214.715mph during the afternoon session, while Katherine Legge had to wait for a specially organised opportunity to run solo laps to get phases 1 and 2 of her Rookie Orientation Program complete, which duly allows her to take part in the full session on Fast Friday.

A full report and driver quotes from practice 6 are available.

Great to see Bourdais out - and Legge now able to start her month!

Interesting - lots of pushing, thousands of laps - no incidents... normally 3 or 4 rookies have gone into the wall hard by now. These cars must be very stable.

Now we are into Fast Friday we will get a better picture about who might be a chance for pole.

One wonders if IMS might be 'encouraging' some of the leading teams to attempt to qualify one of the T-cars on Bump day to keep the very slow Lotus' out of the race...

What are these T cars? I don't watch enough IndyCar because I'm clearly missing something.

spare cars

At Indy the primary car and the spare car are treated as seperate entries, and it is the entries that get qualified for the race, not the drivers (that was how Ryan Hunter-Reay was able to race the car qualified by Bruno Junqiuera last year after RHR's own car failed to qualify

eg... Rubens Barrichello has turned laps this week in car #8 and car #8T, there is nothing stopping both these entries getting qualified for the race (though for the race itself, it won't run as #8T)

These rules are for Indianapolis only

Indy 500: Practice 7 times

Marco Andretti put the extra turboboost on Fast Friday to good use, pushing the fastest time of the week up to 227.540mph (39.5535s), almost 4mph quicker than his own previous benchmark time set on Tuesday.

The five-car Andretti Autosport squad was back in action at Indianapolis on the appropriately-named Fast Friday after taking Thursday off, and stormed back to the front with four of their cars in the top ten as they made good use of the additional 40-50 horsepower turboboost allowed by IndyCar this weekend.

Marco Andretti took the top spot with a mighty lap of 227.540mph (39.5535s), almost 4mph faster than his previous best time set earlier in the week. He was 0.7mph faster than the next quickest man, Penske's Ryan Briscoe (226.835mph, 39.6764s), who was just faster than his team mate Helio Castroneves in third (226.716mph, 39.6973s).

Andretti's Ryan Hunter-Reay was in third with a lap speed of 227.540mph (39.5535s), James Hinchcliffe was sixth place (225.974mph, 39.8276s) and Ana Beatriz an impressive seventh (225.653mph, 39.8842s). Of the Andretti line-up, only Sebastian Saavedra missed out on the top ten finishing back in 19th position with a lap of 224.661mph (40.0604s).

With such strong showings from Andretti and Penske - both Chevrolet-powered cars - the only Honda representation was from the Ganassi duo of Scott Dixon in fifth (226.224mph, 39.7836s) and Dario Franchitti in ninth (225.370mph, 39.9344s). In all, the top 13 cars set times in excess of 225mph and the top 23 all set times faster than anyone had run prior to Friday.

A full report and driver quotes from practice 7 are available.

I think the extra boost thing JUST for qualifying is BS - it's like "check out how good this could be if we let it happen" - but now we have to go back to 220-222 for the race.

Judging by the running this week - the cars and drivers are doing those low speeds SO easy, not even a single hairy moment all month. Bump the things up ****ing 10mph ave, it's 2012.

Good to see Briscoe second given their usual Indy form.

The race boost setting is what is in the rulebook, and what the manufacturers have done their reliability testing based around.

Bumping the boost up for qualifying is no different to 20 years ago when they would wind the boost up for qualifying, but the cars had no chance of lasting the distance in that spec.

They could bump it up for next year, but to do it at this late stage wouldn't be fair on the engine builders.

I'd rather they cut the downforce so the drivers actually have to drive the cars in the corners, rather than just steer.

That really was a great 4 laps from Briscoe, very smooth and consistent. Compare that with Hinchcliffe's run where he had it hanging out and using all the road and we you get almost exactly the same time...i bet Hinch is ruing the last two corners of his run.

The Fast 9 concept is abit silly, as there is potential for the fastest car of the day to not be on pole... and KV Racing made it look even more silly by not sending Kanaan and Viso out for a run in it
