I can't wait for this! Queensland Raceway is set to go Night Racing with the Shannon Nationals Production Car Series! About time Queensland Raceway does something like this!! Just hope they do more Night Racing in the future! :) Speedcafe's artical -
The Australian Manufacturers’ Championship is set to complete a 200km race under lights as part of Queensland Raceway’s upcoming round of the Shannons Nationals.
The revised race schedule will see the production car class contest 200km races on the Saturday and Sunday of the August 10-12 event, with start times of 1745 and 1630 respectively.
A yet-to-be-finalised number of portable lights will be used to illuminate the 3.12km venue for the occasion, although conditions during Saturday’s race are expected to remain dark enough for competitors to be required to run with operating headlights.

Hmmmm, 5.45pm in the middle of August.........yes, that should be a true night race which will be good. Since the merging of GTP and production cars, there have been really good races as you get to see a little Fiesta amongst the field of Evos and BMWs.
It should be epic. |

There where rumors this time last year of a night time V8Supercar race at Queensland Raceway for 2012 , so maybe they are doing this for a test to see if it's successful fan wise... Also I understand that this is off topic here Legendary Gerry lol ...
Right back on topic... But I think this is a awesome idea I will be going to this for sure! I think this would be the first Night Time Racing they have had at Queensland Raceway besides Friday Night Drifts... So it's great to see Queensland Raceway finally starting to spend some money into the fans to try and bring more people. As i said before I really hope they do more of this in the future! I am sure if a big crowd show up they will |

Of all the circuit used the the V8's in Australia QR is probably the easiest to illuminate because of it's compact nature.
I wonder if those huge Musco protable towers still exist in Australia similar to the one shown below??

They were widely used during the Rugby Super League events as well as at Calder Park during the 1997 night V8 round.
Calder has the advantage of the front straight drag strip being well lit and for a few VMRC rounds run in the past 5 portable light towers, like you see at road works, were deployed along the back straight by yours truly mainly to mark the corners and marshal posts.
With the drag strip lights on you've got enough light to see where you are walking/driving on the back straight at Calder but needed a little bit more light for the marshal flag posts and corner apexes.

Are you sure the lights are on?
By the looks they just used portable lights at Turn 6 and along the main straight. I am sure when they do the Shannon Nationals that they will use lights all around the track. |

The Hydraulink 400 ‘Fight in the Night’ Production Car enduro at Queensland Raceway’s Shannons Nationals presented by Hi-Tec Oils round is shaping up as a thriller, with a highly competitive 21-car field entered for the two, 200km races this weekend.
Six of the outright-contending four-wheel-drive turbo cars and several powerful rear-wheel drive entrants make it one of the most open grids of the season – between eight to ten cars shaping as potential outright contenders.
Round six of the 2012 Shannons Nationals features eight categories and a full program, however it is the twin AMC races that are set to be the highlight of the weekend.
Race scheduled to start at 6.30PM I will be there and can't wait sounds like it will be great to watch! :)

Here's a few night race examples from YouTube I found
Calder Park short track about 5 or 6 years ago.
http://youtu.be/wkurveuSeUc
Remember the front straight is the drag strip and on the back straight the lighting was set up so the drivers could pick the corners and see the flaggies and not so the camera could see the cars easier.
This was the Thunderdome with proper lighting.
http://youtu.be/H8pzQRdGkZw
and finally the 1997 ATCC round RAce 2 which was held at night again at Calder Park.
http://youtu.be/ggj77G2oQg8
This one used, from memory, three huge Musco Mobile Light Towers that pretty much turned the track from night to day. |
