The FIA has decided that the only Series that can be called Formula 3 is the main Euroseries, how will this affect the Australian Drivers Championship or it's naming?

The Australian Drivers Championship?

Even though it carries no literal meaning anymore. Apart from the fact that SOME of them ARE Australian... and drivers... and it is a championship.

The FIA can also go and cull themselves.

I don't think it will be an issue. CAMS will probably sweep F3 under the rug seeing as their new baby comes long next year.

The "CAMS Gold Star" and "Australian Drivers Championship" are more meaningful names with more history anyway, thats probably the answer there.

The likes of the British F3 series are the ones that would be most affected by a name change... the term "Australian F3" has little meaning or recognition anyway.

The article I read made it sound like you could still call your series Formula 3, but not F3. All to do with some new engine regs the FIA want to implement across all Formula 3 series, but only the European one (and Japanese) has made the change. All a bit petty if you ask me....

Congratulations Jamie Whincup on 7 Championships!

It's great to see that Formula 3 is still the gold star category, Team BRM will no doubt be the ones to beat this season, looking forward to next round, which i think that John Magro will take delivery of his new car, and hopefully better results :D

Is there any other alternative?

The Gold Star and ADC has no chance of reaching its former glory under F3 rules, but given Australian motorsport's lack of innovation these days, there is little alternative to give the titles too.

Could we see the Gold Star move to Formula 4 in the future?

Possibly, but that is hardly an improvement on the current situation

At the moment winning the Australian Drivers Championship and being awarded the Gold Star is of a lesser importance than winning the Carrera Cup or the Development Series, which is just wrong (in my opinion)

Having noticed this thread after the discussion of openwheelers in Australia started. I'll go one with my opinions here. I was saying that F3 should finish as a class, bit it didn't mean that I thought F3 cars should leave. I reckon there should be a generic, vanilla name, and for it to become a not quite free-for-all formula libre, Medium OSS type class.

Without knowing the exact relative performance. I'd open it up to GP2, FR3.5, FNippon etc. and take it from there. Accounting for safety issues, I wouldn't let them go full bore with any modification, I'd be quite hard on it, in fact. I wouldn't want wide performance disparity, so I'd even restrict how much downforce they could crank up on those wings. I'd only leave it like this because it'd be easier to police.

Because Australia is a smaller motorsport culture, I think we should take advantage of it and use all the spec series out there that are available. Because there are many spec series out there, that have very good cars that are useless outside a limited shelf life as a current class. I think this type of class could mean that potential competitors, could get some relative bargains for some quality cars.

I'd even include a second tier, for the smaller winged OW (FR2.0, Star Mazda). Even if it's to boost grids further. I don't think making any attempt to increase grids is a bad thing, even the expense of criticism. It isn't that big of a deal.

It'd be tough going initially. But with a bit of patience, I think the class could get through.

I was wondering if F3 would continue in Australia, but it seems so.

With new cars in International series and the cancellation of European Formula Masters, there should be a lot of Dallara old type F3 cars available at a good price, but even these old model cars are newer than what is running in Australia.

Organisers are also confident of an expansion in the size of the grid...
“We’ve already seen a number of new cars purchased ready for this year’s Championship, as well as a number of cars still available to both purchase or lease,” read a statement from Formula Three Management.

later addition:

There are only 9 cars running so far in 2019.
That does not bode well for the class as the cars are almost historic.

Even F4 has more entries.

If s5000 takes off, it's maximum grid is still only 14 (at present).

max 14 S5000s?

while I am pushing to believe we will get that many in the first season anyway I would be hoping that there will be more than that!!
